Pin Up Girls: A Collection

The Pin Up

This is a tribute to the pin up girls and vintage pinup girl models of years past. These illustrations were meant to be "pinned-up" and put on display. The artform can be traced back to the 1890s, though many of the images below and during the height of the Pin up girl popularity are from the 1940s, 50s and beyond. The girls are generally glamour models, fashionistas and actresses from the time period. Below are some famous works from Edward D' Ancona, Alberto Vargas and Bill Randall. Enjoy!

Bill Randall

"Noted for his phenomenally successful Date Book calendars of the 1950s and 1960s, Randall was born in 1911 and attended the Chicago Art Institute. He worked as a commercial artist until the war during which he joined with the French underground on a counterpropaganda campaign to create anti-Nazi artwork Randall first gained notice in 1946, when Esquire selected him as a regular contributor to their Gallery of Glamour."

"Vargas continued to paint Hollywood stars while he worked for the magazine. His 1941 movie poster of Betty Grable in Moon Over Miami was a great success; among the other leading ladies he painted were such stars as Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Ava Gardner Linda Darnell, Marlene Dietrich, Loretta Young, and Marilyn Monroe."

George Petty (1894 - 1975)

"By the mid 1920s, Petty was working full-time as a freelance illustrator, providing pretty girl images to a calendar company. After he opened his first studio in Chicago in 1926, his burgeoning client list came to include such companies as Marshall Field's (catalogue front covers) and Atlas Beer (billboards, newspaper ads, and window display art)."
